The Italian Ambassador Andrea Meloni and Prof. Emanuele Fiore, Scientific attaché of the Italian Embassy, visited our laboratories last January 27th where they met with Prof. Antonio Nanci, Director of the Laboratory for the Study of Calcified Tissues and Biomaterials, and Dr. Gilles Lavigne, dean of the Faculty of Dentistry.

The Ambassador Andrea Meloni and Scientific Attaché Emanuele Fiore were made honorary members of the Laboratory for the Study of Calcified Tissues and Biomaterials.

New TEM Microscope

A common effort allows the acquisition of a new electron microscope.

On December 14th 2010, the Electron Imaging Unit of the Laboratory for the Study of Calcified Tissues and Biomaterials inaugurated, in presence of the Rector Guy Breton, a new transmission electron microscope. This Unit, directed by Prof. Antonio Nanci, specializes in characterizing soft materials, including biological samples, biomaterials, polymers and nanoparticles. The acquisition of the new instrument was made possible through a close collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry and of Biochemistry of the university.

The financial contribution of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation in a project directed by Michel D. Buschmann from L’École Polytechnique should also be underlined. Furthermore, the Office of the Vice-rector for Research contributed financially to its establishment, and coordinates its development in concert with partner establishments such as le CHUM, l’Institut de recherché cliniques de Montréal and École Polytechnique. The electron Imaging platform is accessible to users from different disciplines in our university community, and industry.

Prof. Robert E. Prud'homme, director of the Department of Chemistry of the Univesité de Montréal, was also present at the inaguration
