The specific goal of my proposed research is to develop and apply strategies based on nanotechnology to create a new generation of surfaces that have tailor–made chemical–physical properties for applications in various sectors, and particularly in health, including for example biosensors, drug delivery, orthopaedic and dental implants. Major opportunities for improving human health will be created by learning how to make surfaces with controlled nanoscale features. We propose to discover new methods for nanostructuring and nanopatterning suitable substrates as Titanium and other biocompatible materials for dental and orthopaedic applications, in ways that add new functionalities to the surfaces and optimize integration in vivo. In fact, such “intelligent” surfaces may be used to influence, lead and accelerate various biological processes such as bone cell adhesion and growth, typically referred to as tissue repair or regeneration.
